Checkpoint Strikeforce is a research-based, multi-state, zero-tolerance program designed to arrest impaired drivers. This initiative uses checkpoints and patrols when and where drunk driving is most likely to occur. Sobriety checkpoints were set up to occur as often as every week in every participating state, letting the public know this was something to be taken very seriously. The states participating in this program include Delaware, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The variety of states participating in this effort made it impossible to know when you would encounter a checkpoint.
This program began back in 2002, and was originally set up to be a six-month initiative. After experiencing success, Checkpoint Strikeforce was expanded to a yearly effort in 2005. The yearly effort included six months of intense enforcement with at least one checkpoint per week from July through December. Then, from January through June, at least one checkpoint per month was conducted.
Why are checkpoints becoming the main effort to reduce drunk driving? Research has shown that sobriety checkpoints can reduce impaired driving crashes anywhere from 18 to 26 percent. Since 2002, Checkpoint Strikeforce has held over 5,000 checkpoints throughout the region, which has resulted in over 5,000 DWI arrests.
Although this program is only practicing in a specific region, they are attempting to expand their efforts to other states. The program invites any other law enforcement agencies to "join the force" in the fight against drunk driving. If your enforcement agency would like to become a part of the team, call 410-962-7942.
Although Checkpoint Strikeforce started nine years ago, they are still utilizing the tactics in this successful program. In 2010, they put strong emphasis on the six-month period from July to December. For upcoming 2011, they will continue their patrols for the program's tenth year of reducing alcohol-related crashes.
