What is punitive damage?

A: I handle drunk driving injury cases, that is, cases in which people are injured by drunk drivers. In such cases there are special types of damages that can be available to the injured person, outside of those damages that are available for their injuries. This special type of damage is known as a punitive damage, or punishment damage. It's a very tricky and complex area of the law. And in Virginia it's very very difficult to recover this type of punitive damage.
